Irig researchers have developed an innovative approach to photo-physiology at the single-cell and sub-cellular levels. Indeed, it is important to elucidate the mechanisms that optimize photosynthesis at the level of the individual cell, as light undergoes various transformations as it penetrates the different cell layers and even organs. Moreover, within the tissue, cells may react differently depending on their stage of development or physiology.

Irig's internationally acclaimed researchers have improved the assessment of photosynthesis by combining a confocal microscope with saturating pulses, to achieve the following three key objectives:

Examine the specialization of photosynthetic activities within the developing tissues of non-vascular plants. For example, in moss Physcomitrium patensphotosynthetic capacities at the chloroplast level are similar in the different vegetative tissues, and differences observed at the macroscopic level are therefore only due to variations in chloroplast density.

Identify a specific subpopulation of phytoplankton cells involved in marine photosymbiosis. Immediately after symbiosis, symbiotic algae are photosynthetically inactive, in a state of quiescence. After a period of adaptation, their photosynthetic efficiency is better than that of free-living algae.

Examine the link between light penetration and photoprotection responses within the different tissues making up the anatomical structure of a plant leaf.

This simple method can be adapted to various types of samples, as a versatile tool for studies on photosynthetic acclimatization of plants and microalgae, and consequently, for CO2.

Depuis longtemps, les organismes photo-autotrophes captivent l’attention des chercheurs, car ils sont les points d’entrée du carbone dans le cycle de la vie et sont les principaux fixateurs de CO2 dans le monde vivant.
